With its bright colours, velvet furnishings and an eye-catching floor piece of a nude young Norma Jean Baker, 5.Kat boasts one of the city’s most striking interiors.

As its name implies (kat means floor), it occupies the 5th floor of a back-street building in Cihangir. A giant neon angel shines at street level, and a rooftop terrace lit with red lanterns opens during the summer.

The menu is a culinary jack-of-all-trades (Turkish, French, Italian, Oriental); everything is acceptable, although nothing stands out. 5.Kat’s actress proprietor, Yasemin Alkaya, keeps a close watch, even after hours when the dance music is cranked up and a clubby atmosphere takes over. There are occasional live events and regular singles nights.

The restaurant has now a 6th Floor! For people who want to say; “I looked at you yesterday from the hill”.
